This feudal stronghold played an important economic and military role. The original castle was demolished around 1302 on the orders of Philip the Fair. Subsequently, the fortified town was home to a small settlement that was still in existence in the 16th century. Mill, medieval bridge, chapel, fortified gateway, curtain walls and 16th-century buildings make this a wonderful site, steeped in history and set in an astonishing landscape.
