The religious city of Rocamadour was from the 12th to the 14th century one of the high places of pilgrimage in the Christian West
The famous Black Virgin, venerated for her miracles in the miraculous Notre-Dame chapel, has been the object of renewed devotion since the 19th century.
The sanctuaries of Rocamadour, accessible by the Grand Escalier (the street of degrees) which climbs up from the centre of the town to reach the square, are set against the rocky outcrop of the limestone plateau.
The semi-troglodytic sanctuaries were thus built during the 12th century on the narrow and steep space of a rocky terrace.
