In 1805, a first synagogue was built on the site of the former Jacobin convent, which had been in use since 1222. It was almost entirely destroyed by the bombing during the Franco-German war of 1870. It was rebuilt from 1873 to 1875 by the architect Henri Mazilier in the Hispano-Moorish style, inspired by Islamic Spain, at the expense of the Jewish community of Verdun. In 1872, a rectangular building was built next to the synagogue to house the minister and the rabbi.
