When the Germans took an incredible leap forward on June 23, the assault waves from the ridge advanced past Fleury and reached the Froidterre fortification. As they advanced, they encountered determined pockets of resistance. On the southern slope of the Ravin des Vignes, 400 Poilus took shelter in a vaulted gallery, buried 12 meters below ground, named after the four ventilation shafts visible from the heights.
During the terrible days of June, conditions inside were atrocious. Men, wounded or not, struggled to breathe, knowing that at any moment they could be buried alive, gassed or burned alive by flamethrowers. They were saved on June 23 when men from the 114th Battalion of Alpine Chasseurs courageously cleared the enemy from the entrances at the point of bayonets.
