Already at the beginning of the Second World War, the German troops conquered France at lightning speed. The British then left France en masse to regroup in Britain.
This mass exodus was called Operation Dynamo. More than 300,000 soldiers were able to escape from Dunkirk with more than 1000 ships.
HMS Crested Eagle was one of the many less fortunate ships: the ship was bombed by a German aircraft (a Stuka) and stranded at this spot. More than 300 soldiers died in the flames.
