The village of Le Bonhomme is said to have been founded by Saint Déodat, bishop of Nevers who lived around 600 A.D. He was considered by the locals to be the "Good Man" of the region, which would explain the origin of the name "Bonhomme" Homme Bon" of the region, which would explain the origin of the name "Bonhomme". Saint Déodat is also said to be the founder of the Vosges town of Saint-Dié. However, there is an ancient Roman road in the commune, attesting to passages in antiquity.
The first historical reference to Le Bonhomme dates back to 1317, to a transaction concerning the "Gutemberg" castle, the ruins of which can still be seen today. From St Nicolas church, you can hike to the village. Thanks to its position at the foot of the mountain pass, Le Bonhomme was an important crossroads between Alsace and Lorraine in the Middle Ages. This mountain commune offers a wide range of hiking trails to enjoy the beauty of the surrounding countryside.
The Tête des Faux battle left its mark on the commune, which was heavily bombarded during the battle. Take a hike to discover the traces of this period of history.
In the heart of the Vosges mountains, the village is close to the Lac Blanc ski resort. In winter, you can enjoy downhill and cross-country skiing, sledging, tobogganing and snowshoeing. In summer, the Bike Park near Le Bonhomme is the playground of downhill mountain bike aficionados, with its many trails of varying difficulty.
