The Museum Unterlinden is Colmar's main museum. The museum is located in the former Dominican monastery of Colmar. During the French Revolution, the monks were expelled from the monastery and much of the original interior was destroyed. In 1849 the museum moved into the former monastery. The most important piece in the museum is the Isenheimer Altarpiece by Matthias Grünewald. Partly because of this work of art, Museum Unterlinden is one of the most popular museums in this part of France. Every year the museum is visited by about 200,000 visitors. In addition to the Isenheimer altarpiece, the museum displays decorative and popular works of art. One of the most beautiful sections of the museum is where the Impressionist artworks can be found. The museum is open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and has its regular closing day on Tuesdays.
