Construction of the church began in 1316 and was completed in 1371, the nave in 1436.
The monastery belonged to the diocese of Basel, successively to the province of Lyon and then to the province of Besançon4. After its closure in 1792, the buildings became a military hospital. The choir's chevet was amputated during road works in the 19th century.
In 1948 Gérard Ambroselli painted a fresco in the nave that summarizes the history of Alsace.
The bell tower and spire were restored between 2003 and 2006. The monastery has been listed as a historic monument since June 13, 1903. The church is decorated with carvings and is illuminated by pointed arch windows. The choir has five bays with buttresses. It is topped by an openwork bell tower (Gothic style) which is unique in the city.
