The Koifhus, also called the former customs office, used to be one of the most important buildings in the old center of Colmar. The Koifhus is located at the intersection of the Grand'Rue and the Rue des Marchands which used to be Colmar's two main streets. The building has had a dual function for centuries. For example, in one part the seized taxes were kept and other parts of the customs office served as a meeting room for various local meetings. After the building lost its original function, Koifhus has served as a theatre, a Catholic boys' school and as a chamber of commerce. At the end of the nineteenth century, the building was housed in such a way that the municipality wanted to demolish the building. Fortunately, these plans were changed and the building was completely restored. The beautifully glazed tiles on the roof of the building were added during this restoration. Nowadays, events and activities are regularly organized in the Koifhus.
