The Ballastières site, constantly evolving with the seasons...
The Ballastières, located north of the town of Aire-sur-la-Lys, are former ballast and gravel quarries. After the cessation of their exploitation, the site became a recreational area.
Today, proper rehabilitation and management aim to enhance the site and develop its environmental potential.
In this natural space, nature can fully express itself. Indeed, the creation of a reed bed, the creation of ponds, and the introduction of hardy cattle preserve it, while closing part of the site during the breeding season allows it to maintain its natural rhythm.
Thus, for your enjoyment and wonder, the hiking trails provide the opportunity to stroll through this ever-evolving environment.
Finally, thanks to an ornithological observation point, it is the ideal place to admire the different species of the Ballastières.
