The St. Ursmerk Chapel, with the date 1669 engraved in an anchor iron, is the oldest chapel in the municipality.
This chapel of red matte brick and black glass is dedicated to Saint Ursmarus.
Ursmarus of Lobbes, also known as Saint Ursmar or Ursmer, was an important figure in the early Middle Ages in what is now Belgium. He played a crucial role in the spread of Christianity and the development of monasticism in the region.
Ursmarus was born around 645 in what is now France. Little is known about his youth, but he probably entered monastic life at an early age. He became a monk and priest and acquired a reputation for holiness and devotion. Around 691, Ursmarus was appointed abbot of the monastery of Lobbes, located in the current Belgian province of Hainaut.
Under his leadership the monastery grew into an important center of religious and cultural life. The Monastery of Lobbes played a key role in the evangelization of the region and the development of writing. Ursmarus was known for his missionary work. He traveled extensively through the region to spread the Christian faith and found new churches.
Ursmarus died on April 19, 713. After his death, he was canonized for his devotion to the faith and his role in the spread of Christianity. His feast day is celebrated on April 19.
There are several legends of miracles attributed to Ursmarus. One of the most famous stories is that he made a spring spring by hitting the ground with his staff. These miracles contributed to his reputation as a holy man and strengthened devotion among the local population.
Ursmarus is venerated as the patron saint of Lobbes Abbey and is invoked for protection and healing.
