The Hôtel de la Caisse d'Epargne is an early 20th-century building in Bar-sur-Seine. It once housed a banking institution , for which it was built.
The building has three floors and five bays. The middle bay bears the inscription "CAISSE D'EPARGNE", surmounted by the city's coat of arms, followed by a clock with the date "1901" engraved above it. A double staircase leads to the entrance.
A competition for the construction of a building of the Caisse d'Epargne was open to architects from the Aube department and two of the five neighboring departments - Marne (to the north) and Côte-d'Or (to the south). The jury met on March 15, 1900 to examine and rank the projects.
On May 15, 1901, an accident happened at the construction site: a scaffolding loaded with stones broke. Three workers were thrown into thin air. One worker died instantly. Two other workers were seriously injured.
The dedication ceremony took place on October 6, 1903 . The ceremony was postponed and eventually chaired by Étienne, First Vice-President of the Chamber of Deputies, and attended by the mayor.
