The Charrier flour mill, also known as the Bar-sur-Seine mill , is a former flour mill located on a tributary of the Seine. The timber frame mill was built in 1854 on the site of an earlier mill and is the last large mill of this type to exist in the region. In 1914, thousands of quintals of flour were produced here, destined for Troyes and a large part of the department.
According to historian Jacky Provence, there is evidence that a mill stood on this site as early as the 11th century . Ownership of the mill was registered in 1836. In the second half of the nineteenth century, a large half-timbered building was built above the Seine. The mill produced flour and was known as the "Charrier Flour Mill" after its owner. In 1854 an oil mill and a spinning mill were also installed.
The mill stopped operating around 1925.
A small hydroelectric power station was added to the mill in the 1920s . A road bridge over the Seine passes the mill and power station on the upstream side.
The mill has five floors , including one attic. The structure is made of wood, the cavities between the beams on the facades were originally filled and the facades were originally plastered.
The building is built on a stone bridge with four low arches . The three arches under the central part of the building have similar spans and are aligned with the three groups of two windows on the north facade. The end arch has a shorter span and is aligned with the windows on the upper floors of the north facade. The western end rests on the bank and is also aligned with the windows on the upper floors.
On the top floor , a pulley on a projection allowed grain or other objects to be lifted upwards. On each floor a double door gave access to what was lifted by the pulley.
