This bronze statue is a cast of the original work by Joseph-Marius Ramus from 1872.
It depicts a young shepherd fishing, with a young girl at his side trying to catch the fish at the end of the line.
The bronze was made by Jean-Maurice Célérier, a bronze caster from Aubois who lived in Vulaines.
Joseph-Marius Ramus was born in 1805 in Aix-en-Provence, where he studied at the Ecole de Dessin et de Sculpture. He entered the studio of Jean-Pierre Cortot (1787-1843) at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
In 1830, Marius Ramus received the second Grand Prix de Rome for his plaster bas-relief “Theseus Slaying the Minotaur”. With the support of Adolphe Thiers, he was entrusted with an artistic mission to Italy and on his return to Paris he exhibited at several salons.
Marius Ramus was a neoclassical sculptor of great renown . Financially supported by the city of Aix-en-Provence and protected by the Count of Forbin, he received numerous official commissions and executed both portraits and religious sculptures for Parisian churches. For the Notre-Dame de La Garde in Marseille he made statues of Pius IX, Mgr. Mazenod and John and Isaiah.
Around 1845, Marius Ramus married the Parisian-born Adèle Boulouze and moved to Nogent-sur-Seine (Aube), where he lived until his death on 4 June 1888. Here he discovered the talent of his gardener son, Alfred Boucher, and took him as his apprentice.
