During the liberation in 1944, during the bombing, the church was hit by two shells, all the stained glass windows were broken.... All except the one representing Saint Barbara, which was miraculously intact .... The bussenets, inhabitants of Bussang, under the impulse of the Abée Vaché then formulated this wish: "If Bussang is spared, as a thanksgiving, we will mount a statue of Saint Barbara on the highest mountain of Bussang, at the place called the Horses." As it turned out, Bussang didn't suffer too materially. After the conflict, the inhabitants were able to collect copper, bronze and other materials to make the statue. The inauguration took place on October 3, 1948. Saint Barbara is only accessible on foot. A footpath leads you from the centre of the village to the statue, it climbs a little but the view on the village is worth the effort! A description of how to get there is downloadable below. The IGN 3619 map is on sale at the tourist office for more details.
