The ramparts were built between 1675 and 1691 on the orders of Louis XIV by Jacques Tarade, according to plans by Vauban. They follow a layout close to that of the medieval enclosure
Three monumental gates, the preserved Strasbourg Gate, the Brisach Gate and the Colmar Gate, open the city to the outside world.
These fortifications were victoriously besieged twice in 1814 and 1815, but were dismantled in 1874, after the Germans took the city
Two bastions to the south of the town remain today as bastions. One of them bears the public commission of contemporary art "Meeting point: the dream" by Sarkis (1993).
