The villages of the Bruche valley are dotted with numerous double-barrel fountains used to ward off the risk of fire, to provide the inhabitants with running water, and to act as watering places and wash houses. The fountains in the mountain villages, most of which date from the 19th century, are rustic and are sometimes masterpieces of sculpture, as in Wisches-Hersbach. The municipality of Saâles is one of those with a large number of such fountains, with more than 25 public fountains.
