Saint Bartholomew's Church
Between Flamboyant Gothic and Renaissance
After the Burgundy war which ended in 1477 at the battle of Nancy with the victory of René II, a period of (relative) peace, demographic and economic growth opened up for the duchy of Lorraine which lasted until 1560. In the Xaintois as in the whole diocese of Toul, a vast movement of construction of new churches was strongly felt in particular in the years 1520 to 1550. The church of Gugney in Les Aulx is a perfect example of what can be called the flamboyant art of the countryside.
Its silhouette is identical to that of Jorxey: high bell towers flanking the nave with a five-sided chevet, representing the traditional image of the church in the Lorraine countryside. Inside, a nave with 3 aisles contains a real museum of flamboyant and renaissance religious sculpture.
