From its very beginnings, the history of Verdun has been intertwined with the great movements of European civilization. It was here that the Treaty of Verdun was signed in 843, a treaty that laid the foundations of modern Europe. In the 16th century, the Kingdom of France annexed the Three Bishoprics (Metz, Toul and Verdun), and Henri II entered Verdun on June 12, 1552. This situation was confirmed by the Treaties of Westphalia in 1648. Life in the city was to see many more significant episodes during the Revolution - when Governor Beaurepaire chose suicide rather than surrender - under the Empire and during the 1870 war. Verdun has always been a place to defend. The numerous fortifications that encircle Verdun bear witness to the city?s military vocation. Attila, Clovis, kings of France and Germanic rulers all laid siege to Verdun. But Verdun's strategic position close to borders and on the banks of the Meuse River also facilitated its economic and cultural influence. In the Middle Ages, Verdun merchants were known throughout Europe. Goods between northern and southern Europe passed through the port of Verdun, and life in the city was organized along the canals and around the markets.
