Ville de Neufchâteau

On the borders of Lorraine and Champagne, the town of Neufchâteau, once protected by a ducal castle, has thrived since the Middle Ages thanks to the cloth trade.
The town has been classified as the Vosges' first remarkable heritage site. The town's wealth lies mainly in the buildings constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries and its two churches. The Saint-Christophe church houses a masterpiece that is unique in Europe: the Wiriot chapel, with its aerial vaulting and hanging key ribs. The Scala is located in the wing of a former monastery, which has been converted into an Italian-style theater. The recently restored Renaissance staircase of the Hôtel de Ville can be visited free of charge during opening hours at the Mairie de Neufchâteau.
A cavalier map is available to guide visitors, and explanatory desks are positioned at the main monuments. It is also possible to follow the audio-guided tour via the Cirkwi app. Every year, the Tourist Office organizes themed guided tours of the historic center, and free visits are offered to the churches of Saint-Nicolas and Saint-Christophe during the summer months. The town of Neufchâteau completes the program with Les Estivales de Neufchâteau: a full program of free outings featuring concerts, open-air cinema, shows and more.
Just a stone's throw from Neufchâteau, you'll also find some not-to-be-missed sites:
- the birthplace of Joan of Arc at Domremy-la-Pucelle
- the Bois Chenu basilica
- the Gallo-Roman site of Grand, with one of the largest amphitheaters in Gaul, and a 232 m² mosaic.
The surrounding orchards offer quality fruit and produce abundant harvests of mirabelle plums, which are transformed into jams, syrups, juices, spirits and tarts. Tourte, apple, mirabelle plum and pâté lorrain are also celebrated.
