The Notre Dame de Grunenwald chapel stands on the wooded ridge that separates the valley of the largue from that of the suarcine. The latter is both the border between the departments of Haut-Rhin and Territoire de Belfort and the former linguistic border between the Germanic and Romanic "speaking" areas. During the week, this place perched high up is quiet, and you can rest in the shade of the lime trees.
The chapel probably dates back to the second half of the 15th century, but the crowned Madonna holding the baby Jesus cannot be dated precisely. An ancient legend surrounds the Madonna kept in the small pilgrimage chapel.
Children would have found the statue in the undergrowth. They entrusted it to the Commander of the Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem at the Free Court of Friesen. The latter then built a first chapel on the site. In 1530, the knights of the Hospitallers took the name of the Order of Malta.
The chapel is open every day from 9 am to 5 pm.
