Nestling on its hilltop, the town was the pride of the lords of Gourdon. Following the siege of the town, one of its prominent representatives, Bertrand, a 12th-century troubadour, is said by local tradition to have caused the death of Richard the Lionheart. In the heart of the commercial city, every stone reveals its past: the gateway to the Rue du Majou, the townhouses, the stalls of the rich clothmakers. Imagine its inhabitants at work in the narrow, winding lanes with their evocative names of the trade guilds "Ouliers, Mazeliers". at the time, 5,000 people lived within the 14th-century walls. Today, the circular shape of the boulevards remains from the castle and ramparts pierced by 4 fortified gates.
