The Prussian and Bavarian artillery, 1870, more numerous and more efficient, quickly neutralized the French artillery and then, by its terribly efficient fire, it massacred with impunity our magnificent regiments of African Hunters, Hussars, Cuirassiers... General Margueritte's cavalrymen could only charge for honor in a desperate situation, but their heroic charges were the last and most pathetic in the history of French cavalry.The Memorial and the steles of the 12 Regiments of the African Chasseurs which are spread out to the right and left of the central monument are well dedicated to the memory of the African Chasseurs, but this monument, due to the sculptor Emile Guillaume, carries in all its width the large inscription "In honour of the French cavalry" which leaves no doubt about the national importance of this high place. It is also called "the Brave People" to remind us that the King of Prussia, William I, admiring this heroism, could not help but exclaim "Ah, the Brave People", following the battle with the binoculars of the Roman road at Frénois.At the foot of the monument were gathered under a large slab, in 1950, the body of Lieutenant Colonel de Liniers who commanded the 3rd Regiment of African Chasseurs and those of about 150 officers and cavalrymen who fell during the charges, previously buried at the foot of the oldest oak of Sedan surrounded by an enclosure which remains today a place of memory and meditation, at the place known as "Fond de Cazal".
