FORET DOMANIALE DE L'ARMAGNAC - BERDOUES

The state forest of Berdoues (including some private woods on the outskirts) is located south of Mirande in the heart of the agricultural plain of the Grande Baïse, and as such constitutes one of the rare forest complexes of the department in this topographical situation.
It is one of the most important beech forests (mixed with oak) in the department
These undergrowths are also home to large populations of Lily of the Valley (Convallaria majalis), which are harvested in May.
A diversified and remarkable range of mushrooms for the department is also present in these beech undergrowths.
The existence, in certain parts of these woods, of mature and senescent forest phases (ageing trees, important presence of dead wood) allows the maintenance of a typical forest avifauna with the very particular presence of the Middle Spotted Woodpecker.
More generally, these woods are home to a diversified avifauna.
This richness is therefore extremely linked to the permanence of the beech stand - more generally of the indigenous hardwood species - and to the maintenance of forestry practices that respect biodiversity.
