Built after 1583 for the guild of butchers, the Metzig (the butcher's shop in Alsatian) is the most representative building of the Renaissance style in Molsheim.
The facade of this beautiful building is decorated with a jaquemart clock (1607), where two automatons, now made of stone (1857), still ring the hour. Its author is not known. It consists of 3 dials;
in the center, the hours,
downstairs, quarter past the hour
above, the phases of the moon
Around the central dial are 2 statues that strike the bells every hour (on the right) and quarter hour (on the left, but this last mechanism no longer works).
In the upper part of the turret, 2 cherubs decorate the pediment and just above is a niche that houses a statue of a Virgin and Child
The clock was often out of use between 1850 and 1924. In 1924, the watchmaker Ganter from Molsheim repaired it and put it back into service. In 1983, the paintings on the dials were restored. In 1995, the original mechanism was dismantled and replaced in 1998 by an electronic mechanism.
