Pilot who became famous before the war for having beaten various records and after having accomplished the first aerial crossing of the Mediterranean in September 1913, in 7h53 min. He volunteered at the beginning of the war. It is him who will develop the shooting through the axis of the propeller of the aircraft, creating the very first fighter plane. This ingenious system allowed him to shine in combat. In April 1915, forced to land in occupied territory, he was taken prisoner for 34 months in Germany before escaping. He returned to the front in 1918 to fight his last battles in the region. A stele, located on the spot where on October 5th 1918, Lieutenant-Airman Roland Garros lost his life on board his SPADXIII.Today he is buried in the French military cemetery of Vouziers, the monument overhanging the vault was made and installed in 1924 by Victor Pierrard of Vouziers on the initiative of the mother of the aviator. 2 audio terminals located in Vouziers and St Morel will tell you his story.
