Settled in the city since the 13th century, the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Selestat had the vocation to train the Alsatian nobles in the defence of Christianity in the western Mediterranean.
Of all the buildings founded in 1265, only the "Ritterhof" (the Knights' Monk's House of 1410) and the Prior's House, built in 1565, remain. This three-storey quadrangular building marks an important stage in the history of the Renaissance in Selestat in that it adopts the characters of the second half of the 16th century.
The door of the turret is of Gothic tradition. The spiral staircase of the turret has many marks of stonemasons.
It currently houses City services.
