Built around 1460, this small Gothic chapel is a testimony to the gratitude of the people of Saint-Maixent towards King Charles VII who, in April 1440, granted Saint-Maixent the status of a commune by letters patent.
The king thus rewarded the loyalty of the inhabitants, who had remained faithful to him during the Praguerie revolt.
The chapel is situated on the spot where Charles VII's troops would have gathered before storming the castle, which was taken by the rebels on 3 April 1440.
The building has a very elaborate facade and since 1990 it has housed a lapidary museum which preserves capitals and tombstones from the excavations of the Saint-Saturnin church as well as some remains of ancient monuments.
