Eglise Saint-Hilaire

Situated on Place Carnot, in the heart of the town, Rue de la Fausse Porte has the unusual feature of passing under the choir of the church building via a beautiful stone vault. Perhaps you're not familiar with Victor Hugo's 1838 text, in which he gently mocks the bell tower of Saint-Hilaire church: "The brave architect has taken a square priest's or lawyer's bonnet. On this square bonnet, he scaffolded an inverted salad bowl; on the bottom of this salad bowl, now a platform, he placed a sugar bowl, on the sugar bowl, a bottle, on the bottle, a sun inserted into the neck by the lower vertical beam; and finally, on the sun, a rooster skewered into the upper vertical beam. Stained-glass windows at Saint-Hilaire church: The association des amis du patrimoine religieux Givetois (Givet religious heritage association) has invested in the restoration of the interior of Givet's Saint-Hilaire church, with the project of equipping it with 18 new contemporary-style stained-glass windows. The windows were designed by artist-painter Catherine Roch from Hillerin and produced by Simon Marcq, a master glassmaker from Reims. 18 stained glass windows are to be installed, each 5 m high and 2.30 m wide (8 in the choir and 10 in the nave).
