Fort Condé is built around a rocky outcrop, originally topped by a watchtower: the Tour Maugis, later known as the Tour Villahermosa, named after the governor of the Spanish Netherlands when Givet was a Spanish possession.after Givet became part of France in 1678, this tower was razed to the ground, and Vauban had the central redoubt carved out of the rock. From 1725 to 1732, this redoubt was incorporated into a much larger structure, the Fort Condé, which was subsequently little altered. The Fort Condé's role was to defend Charlemont on the east side, like the Fort de Rome on the west side. The fort, designed by the engineer Candau, forms a pentagon with a perimeter of around 400 meters. The front sides form a north-facing point and are surrounded by ditches. These are preceded by a counterscarp inside which runs a gallery, from which small counter-mine galleries lead off.ISMH (Inventaire Supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques) listed site, currently being restored and not open to the public. PLEASE NOTE: Two trails have been laid out and are open to the public free of charge: The advanced defences trail (1.2 km) and the milestones trail (2.7 km)
