According to the legend, Saint-Hilaire passed through Availles to visit his parents. Tired, he would have stopped near the church where he would have raised a large stone under which would have gushed a spring which has never dried up since. The modest parish church, whose parish depended on Saint-Jouin-de-Marnes, is mentioned as early as the 12th century. The remains of this period are thin.
