Saint-Jacques is a Catholic parish church in the Gothic style.
It is the product of two distinct periods: the choir, transept and nave with aisles were built between 1235 and 1270, with the exception of the upper part of the nave; the latter, the bell tower, the chapels along the aisles and the ambulatory were added between 1476 and the mid-16th century. The bell tower is a remarkable work, as are the choir and transept, which represent the oldest parts of the church and are an interesting illustration of the pre-Rayonnant style.
The interior of the church is marked by late Ancien Régime transformations, including marble lining of the choir and panelling of the nave pillars.
In 1998, the church was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List as part of France's Pilgrimage Route to Santiago de Compostela. It is also affiliated with the parish of the Seize Bienheureuses Carmélites de Compiègne.
Anecdote: Joan of Arc came to pray here in 1430 on the morning of her capture...
