When it divided the former province of Aquitaine
– home of the poet Ausone and of Eleanor – into départements, the Empire ran the border between Gironde and Lot-et-Garonne through the centre of the estate’s vineyards. And today, these hillsides continue to produce wines from the noble grape varieties that grow here – the monks’ red Bordeaux to the west in Gironde, and the dukes’ red and white Côtes de Duras to
the east in Lot-et-Garrone. Descendants of a tradition that reaches back to Roman Gaul, these wines were the chosen favourites of the Abbots of Saint-Ferme and the Dukes of Duras.
