Until 1889, the cemetery of Ruaux (a village attached to the commune of Plombières-les-bains) adjoined the church of Saint Jean Baptiste.
Having become too small, and for reasons of hygiene, it was decided to move it to the wooded hillside 250 m west of the church, chosen for its calm. An all-stone chapel was built to watch over the remains of the deceased, buried beneath what today appears to be a large cross on the ground.
A chapel was then built to watch over the deceased, named by the locals "Notre Dame de Consolation". An open-air mass has been celebrated here every year since 1980.
