Count Eberhard, brother of Duke Liutfrid and grandson of the Duke of Alsace Adalric-Etichon, the father of Sainte Odile, is said to have built or restored the castle around 720. Egeno, a relative of Eberhard, restored the castle and thus gave his name to the village of Eguisheim, which was born around this fortress. The county family lived in the castle until 1225, when the line died out.
The rooms on the ground floor date from the 10th century and were used as a dwelling for Count Hugo IV of Eguisheim and his wife Countess Heilwige de Dabo, a relative of Count Bruno born in 1002, future Bishop of Toul and Pope Leo IX.
The castle of Eguisheim now belongs to the commune. It is only open during exhibitions, certain events and receptions.
