Erected in memory of the Neocastrians who died during the Great War, the monument to the dead located in the centre of the Place des Cordeliers was inaugurated on 25 April 1925. Originally, the names of 149 men who fell during the conflict were listed. Other names were added later, notably those of Neocastrians who fell during the Second World War
This monument is the work of Emile Just Bachelet: born in Nancy, this artist who studied Fine Arts in Paris and Nancy was declared unfit for active service during the war. He was mobilized as a nurse in a military hospital in Troyes and then in Lure, where he drew and made busts of wounded soldiers. We owe him many monuments to the dead erected in Lorraine, including those of Badonviller, Bois-le-Prêtre, Epinal, Pont-à-Mousson, Remiremont, Toul and Vézelise.
