Bordered to the north by the Meuse river and to the south by the Bar river, the Marfée extends to the west as far as the Croix Piot.1870 If the site was the scene of many Franco-German battles (1870, 1914-1918, 1939-1945), it is today a high place of memory on which a spirit of peace and reconciliation breathes.1870 The inhabitants of Noyers, who saw the Germans take the Marfée plateau without a fight at the end of August, understand the drama that was about to unfold. The Army of Châlons, commanded by Mac Mahon, was pushed back to the right bank of the Meuse. Moltke's troops control the left bank from Mouzon to Donchery, while to the east the Saxons approach the French forces to take them in pincers on the Givonne. On 1 September, the battle raged from Bazeilles to Floing and German artillery, firing from the slopes of the Marfée and Liry, wreaked havoc in the ranks of the Troops of Marine.1914: After defending Sedan for two days, the 11th Corps of the IVth French Army withdrew to the left bank of the Meuse on 26 August in the late morning. The men of the 17th Corps were then responsible for defending the plateau of the Marfée. The Germans surprised them in the middle of the night and pushed them as far as Chaumont. At 6 a.m. on 27 August, the Bretons and the Vendéens counter-attacked with bayonets, reached Noyers at 9 a.m. and threw the invader back onto the banks of the Meuse. On 28 August, Joffre ordered the general withdrawal to Paris, which, by an incredible turn of events, allowed the victory of the Marne.1940: After having violated the neutrality of Belgium and the Netherlands, the German army arrived in Sedan on 12 May. On the 13th, from 11am to 3pm, the German air force bombed without interruption the French positions of the Marfée massif. French artillery fire was stopped dead in its tracks. During the day, assault troops crossed the Meuse and reached Pont-Maugis, Frénois and La Croix Piot, followed the next morning, 14 May, by General Guderian's armoured vehicles, which launched an assault on the Marfée plateau as far as Bulson. The fighting then moved on to Stonne where fierce resistance temporarily fixed the front.
