It was founded following the priory established by Saint Adérald, who brought back a piece of Christ's tomb and set up a priory of the Cluny order in the 11th century. Named Samblières before this event, when the tomb arrived the village opted for Saint-Sépulcre. In 1673, the village changed its name to Villacerf.
The church's 16th-century stained glass windows are listed as historic monuments, as are some ten items of furnishings. The church also boasts an 18th-century altarpiece and tabernacle, with a listed oil on canvas depicting the Virgin and Child, accompanied by Saint John the Baptist and Saint Elizabeth. Several 16th-century polychrome limestone sculptures are also listed: a Piéta, a Saint Barbara and a Saint John the Baptist.
