On August 15, 1914, the battle raged around the village. Faced with the threat from the chief of the occupiers to destroy the village with cannon fire and to shoot all the people locked in the church, several of them addressed their prayers to the Virgin Mary and vowed that if France won victory in this world war, delivered Alsace from the Prussian yoke and saved the village, they would erect a statue dedicated in gratitude. This was done on 15 August 1920, the anniversary of the Battle of Barembach, with the inauguration with great pomp of the replica of the Lourdes cave, as it still exists today.
