Built in the first half of the 13th century, the Coudray-Salbart castle is a remarkable military fortress.
A rich architecture: 14 rooms in an exceptional state of preservation including 12 vaulted rooms of various architectural styles (8 open to the public).
A defence system with a peripheral sheath (corridor inside the curtains) unique in Europe.
A Mysterious Story: The first document describing this building dates back to 1460, while the beginning of the construction dates back to 1202/1204. Classified as a historical monument, it has been the object of all the attentions of the Friends of Coudray-Salbart since 1961 and of its owner, the Communauté d'Agglomération du Niortais since 2000. Important restorations have been carried out in this flagship of military architecture, which has not undergone much remodelling.
