At the confluence at Le Breuil, the clear waters of the Gartempe mingle with the dark waters of the Creuse. Rich in fish, they also powered the mills and supplied water to the town's tanneries. Thanks to the towpath running alongside the Creuse, timber could be floated down the river until the 19th century. These rivers, with their sometimes violent floods, were also difficult frontiers to cross.
The mill is, of course, the machine used to make flour!
