Antependium - église Saint-Maur

In 2014, the chance discovery of a 17th-century Antependium, preserved in the church of Saint-Maur in Bouxurulles (Vosges), enabled the commune to bring to light a long-forgotten work. Its originality lies in its two polychrome sides: on one side, the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament; on the other, a Memento Mori. On one side, the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament or Eucharist, used for ordinary Masses, is represented by a central scene in a medallion where two angels frame a gilded monstrance, bathed in divine light and containing the Holy Host. The depiction of Corpus Christi contributes to its glorification and allows the faithful total devotion. On the other side, a white cross on a black background divides the space into four sections, each containing human skulls and bones in saltire. This scene represents a Memento Mori, Latin for "remember you're going to die". It was used in funeral ceremonies. Very few similar examples in polychrome wood exist in France. The name of the commissioner and the painter are unknown, but the style is typical of Eastern France.
