The monument is the work of Maurice Ringot and was inaugurated in 1923 and restored in 1945, leaving visible the bullet holes that pierced the bronze.
It depicts a dying soldier with the palms of victory in his hand, in front of the city walls , symbolised by a statue of a woman with the coat of arms of Bergues at her feet, made of limestone.
