Locronan

Description

An intact and legendary heritage

The ambiance of the priory church contrasts with the bustling activity of the old city. Barges have replaced the shipowners who came to rig their vessels bound for the New World. Traditional delicacies have succeeded linen and hemp cloth pieces. Beyond the cobbled alleys, the visitor steps into the footsteps of the pilgrims who have climbed the sacred mountain, witness to 2,500 years of history.

On this sacred site, a Celtic nemeton (temple) was first erected, Christianized in the 7th century by Saint Ronan. A palatial site then took place at the foot of the mountain. Undoubtedly ruined by the Normans, the habitat from the 10th century joined the location of Ronan's hermitage. The piety of the Counts of Cornouaille towards Saint Ronan, followed by that of the Dukes of Brittany, led to the erection of a first Romanesque church, the creation of a Benedictine priory, and finally to the construction of the priory church in the 15th century.

Exempt from various taxes by the ducal authority, Locronan became the seat of an important sailcloth weaving factory. The houses on the square bear witness to this industry: sail office, hotel of the East India Company, homes of merchants, notaries, controllers for the King, and officials… At the foot of the square tower of the church, a stout and solitary keep, rich houses of bluish granite form a beautiful architectural ensemble.

Time seems to have stopped in the square and in the old streets. This heritage with its intact beauties enchants filmmakers in search of authenticity. Hundreds of thousands of visitors come to Locronan each year, a true movie set. The facilities for welcoming visitors ensure the preservation of the heritage quality.

Many tourists also stop here during the pardons and the Troménies. During the small Troménie, an annual procession, the pilgrims retrace the route that Saint Ronan used to take on fasting every morning. The large Troménie takes place every six years and circles the mountain (twelve kilometers).
