Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption – Saint-Tropez

Description

In the 18th century , Saint-Tropez grew as a fishing village and military port. The older church (now the Chapelle de la Miséricorde) became too small. Therefore, it was decided to build a larger parish church on a higher point in the village. Construction began around 1740 and lasted until approximately 1784. The striking bell tower only acquired its characteristic yellow and ochre colors later (in the early 19th century), so recognizable today.

The bell tower, with its ochre and orange plasterwork, is the symbol of Saint-Tropez. You'll see it on almost every postcard or painting of the village.

The church is dedicated to Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption , but houses the statue and relics of San Torpes – the Roman martyr after whom Saint-Tropez is named. According to legend, Torpes was beheaded in Pisa by Emperor Nero in the first century. His body washed up on the beach where Saint-Tropez now stands. The church plays a central role in the "Bravades" of Saint-Tropez , a centuries-old tradition in which residents in period uniforms honor their saint (San Torpes) with parades, fireworks, and religious services.

The interior contains 18th century sculptures and paintings, an impressive organ and a colorful wooden statue of San Torpes in Roman armor.
