The cemetery was founded in 1791 , replacing earlier cemeteries.
The current site was opened in 1815 , with several extensions in 1855, 1871, 1894, 1920, 1960 and 1980 (when a crypt was added).
It is an intimate and serene cemetery overlooking the sea, framed by shady hydrangeas, tamarisk bushes, and reed mats. It is one of the few cemeteries directly on the sea in France.
Sometimes called the " Père Lachaise of the Côte d'Azur ," it contains the graves of prominent artists and personalities . Think of the graves of Pierre Bachelet, Eddie Barclay —known as "the emperor of the microsillon," whose grave is adorned with large vinyl records and the inscription "Que la fête continue" —Roger Vadim , Blandine Liszt , André Dunoyer de Segonzac , and even an Indian princess, Bannou Pan Deï.
