Discovery route through the Petite Camargue gardoise on quiet country roads and the Camino de Santiago.
You can park your vehicle at the Halte nautique parking lot in Gallician (30600), where Le Barjonaute will deliver your recumbent bikes. Your outing begins with crossing the Rhône à Sète canal. On this bridge, you can admire a beautiful landscape. In the morning, looking east, your view reaches the Alpilles. You head south on the D 779. On your left is the Etang du Crey and on your right the Etang du Charnier, which line your way to the first intersection (5 km). Turn left towards St Gilles (D 179). You are at the entrance of the Scamandre discovery center, which is open from Wednesday to Saturday. You are 10.2 km away from the Saint Gilles boat lift. To get there, you cross the cultivated Petite Camargue. Opposite the access to the technical facility of the boat lift operated by VNF, you will find a dirt road that leads you to the southern bank of the canal. You keep this road until a fork. Turn right to get to the bridge, you have covered 2.5 km. Cross the bridge over the Rhône à Sète canal and head north for 1.1 km, then you will reach the Château d'Espeyran, home of the national archives of France. A visit is possible if you request in advance. Before the castle gate, take the right road that leads you to Saint Gilles. You will reach an intersection, behind the Intermarché store. If you want to visit the town, go straight on, otherwise turn left to reach the intersection with the D 6572. Cross this intersection and go 300 m to the left turnoff to the D 14 leading to Générac. You need to cycle 1.4 km to reach the irrigation canal Philippe Lamour, then turn left to utilize the southern bank heading west. From this point, your way back to Gallician is exclusively along the path. After 3.7 km, you will reach the Camino de Santiago, indicated by the yellow markings in the shape of a shell. When the Camino crosses the Philippe Lamour canal (3.6 km), leave it and continue on the northern bank heading west. Just a few more kilometers to reach the D 6572. Cross this intersection carefully to reach the D 779 at the entrance to Gallician, always along the canal edge. At this point, you will cross the railway line and quietly ride through the hamlet to return the recumbent bike you rented from Barjonaute and reach your vehicle.
