Description by the author

Boulogne-sur-mer, 'Cité de la Mer' or also called the pearl of the Opal Coast , is definitely worth a visit.

Not only Nausicaá and France's largest fishing port make the city famous, but also its medieval city centre with its UNESCO World Heritage belfry and a number of famous residents make this a historically important city .

Start at the Enclos la plage car park, close to Nausicaá.

We immediately pass the statue of San Martin, the "Libertador" of Argentina.

We stroll along the Quai Gambetta, pass a statue honoring the inventor of the ship's propeller and arrive at the marina.

We now walk to the upper town , but first pass a statue of the inventor of the peliculle and the St. Nicholas Church on a pleasant square.

Soon we arrive at and on top of the medieval fortress walls of the city with its 4 city gates.

In the upper town, the Belfry and the town hall are the eye-catchers at the Jardin éphémère. Under the more distant Basilique Notre-Dame lies one of the largest crypts in France.

A little further on, the castle awaits with the beautiful moat path around it. This brings us just outside the ramparts, which we enter again via the Porte Neuve.

This brings us to the remarkable Square Auguste Mariette, where the famous Egyptologist is honoured with an Obilisk, a pyramid and a statue.

We walk through the Jardin des Tintelleries and finally return along the Quai Gambetta.
