Description by the author

Dunkirk, city of privateers, third largest port in France and the scene of one of the largest operations of the Second World War, filmed in Dunkirk, is more than worth a visit!

This walk gives a good impression of the most important sights in the city and can therefore serve as a city guide.

Start at the FRAC parking. Across the water we see the imposing Mémorial des alliés which commemorates Operation Dynamo , omnipresent here. We walk through the Jardin des sculptures with its astonishing white ceramic architecture and here too a memory of Operation Dynamo in the Bastion 32 museum.

The Monument La Victoire commemorates the hundredth anniversary of the victory over the English in 1793.

The centre of the city is Place Jean-Bart , which commemorates the privateer who saved France from famine .

A little further on is the Saint-Eloi church, known as the Cathedral of the Sands , known for its stained glass windows and organ.

The belfry of Saint-Eloy and the town hall further on are the next eye-catchers.

For a journey of discovery through the history of the port, you must visit the Maritime and Port Museum . A visit to Duchesse Anne, the largest sailing ship in France , and the fireboat Sandettié are part of the visit. Climbing the Risban lighthouse , a little further on, is also part of it.

The Leughenaer Tower is the oldest monument in the city.

Back at the car park we are at the FRAC which has artwork and design from the 1960s to the present . The collection comprises more than 1800 works ,

Be sure to also consult the information about the sights on site. It will explain what you will see.
