On 23 October 1917, seven months after the Nivelle offensive was launched on the Chemin des Dames, the new
commander-in-chief, General Pétain, ordered a limited offensive in the sector of Fort de la Malmaison
Initially planned for July, the offensive was intended to dislodge the Germans from the western heights of the plateau
Within a few days, the operation was crowned with success.
